How Do I Choose My Door Unit Size?

Choosing the correct door size starts with measuring your rough opening, which is the framed opening in the wall where the door will be installed.

Step 1: Confirm the Rough Opening Size

The rough opening is the framed space in the wall where the door will be installed. It is created during construction using wall studs before the door unit is placed.
Measure the width and height of the wall opening from stud to stud.
Step 2: Allow Installation Space and Confirm the Door Unit Size

To ensure proper installation, the rough opening is usually made slightly larger than the door frame size.
Typical Installation Gap
Width: leave about 1 inch total
Height: leave about 1/2 inch.

All the wrought iron doors are pre-hung, therefore, the door size indicated will be the net frame size, including the jambs and threshold. So the unit size will be the final door frame size after allowing space for the installation gap.

How Should I Confirm the Jamb Size?

1. What is Jamb Size?

The jamb size refers to the depth of the door frame, which should match the thickness of your wall so the door fits properly.

2. Why is it important?
The door frame fits properly in the wall
The installation looks clean and professional.

3. Which jamb size should I choose?
Measure from the interior finished wall surface to the exterior finished wall surface. This includes drywall. For example, if your total wall thickness is 6", a 6" jamb is typically recommended.


The common mistakes while you are confirming the sizes.

1. 1. The door size is for the door slab only. (x)

The door size indicated on our website is the net frame size, including the frames/jambs and threshold if there is one. If the door has a transom above or the sidelights, the size also includes the frame.  

2. No installation gap leaving for the door unit. (x)
Pls leave at least 1" in width and 1/2" in height for the installation gap. Therefore, the rough opening size should be at least 1" wider and 1/2" taller than the door net frame size. 

3. The jamb size is not important. (x)
If the jamb is too small, the framing or rough opening may be exposed. 

If the jamb is too large, it will need to be trimmed and fitted to the wall.

Of course, Legend Iron Doors will verify all the measurements with you before production. And the CAD drawing will be provided for approval, to avoid any mistakes.
